Opinions on semi-automating the data on "Extension default namespaces" article
[edit]RESOLVED | |
automation may not be useful for this page |
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Currently, Extension default namespaces has to be manually updated by editors every time an extension introduces a new namespace or has some change related to its namespaces.
I had the idea of trying to help semi-automate it, using Module:ExtensionJson as the source, with Module:Extension namespaces using the data. The extension namespaces Lua module can currently help with generating the namespace table for extensions that have migrated to using extension.json.
Right now it doesn't support remarks unfortunately; however, I was thinking of dynamically generating the remark parameters, so you could pass in e.g {{{remark-460}}}
(where 460 is the namespace ID, in this case, the "Campaign" namespace added by the UploadWizard extension).
A proof-of-concept can be seen in the the sandbox page. (custom error message has been made just to help editors out)
I'm not entirely sure if this is a big improvement than before, since the remarks still have to be manually inserted, but I think it would be a small improvement since the namespaces could be automatically looked up.
The syntax to invoke the Lua module currently looks like this:
{{#invoke:extension namespaces|getWikitextTable|extension=LiquidThreads}}SamanthaNguyen (talk) 01:37, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
- If you are going to automate the page, why not go further, and automatically list all extensions in Module:ExtensionJson that define namespaces? * Pppery * it has begun 02:05, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
- That was originally the plan. Extension default namespaces is currently organized by ID (which seems the best way to organize the article), with some extensions mixed in each section with an extension.json file, and some without an extension.json file.
- I couldn't think of a good way at the time to cleanly interject tables for extensions that don't have an extension.json file while still having it sorted, but if you have any suggestions I'll gladly work on it!
- With it fully automated, the remarks could still just be passed in one invocation, with some comments separating, like below, which I think would work well.
- SamanthaNguyen (talk) 02:16, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
{{#invoke:extension namespaces|getWikitextTable <!-- Campaign --> |remark-460 = |remark-461 = <!-- JsonConfig, etc --> }}
- Actually right, there could be
{{{extension-N}}}
parameters for which those extensions would pass in their own table, and then have the content sorted, and then have the final output returned. I'll start working more on this today/tomorrow. SamanthaNguyen (talk) 02:20, 22 August 2020 (UTC) - I am actually in the process of coding the full automation. * Pppery * it has begun 02:21, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
- Alright, I appreciate your work and assistance! SamanthaNguyen (talk) 02:23, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
- I've coded it (demonstration showing one automatically fetched and one manually entered extension), but realized in the process that less than half of the extensions currently listed on that page can have their namespaces parsed this way, which makes me wonder whether this is actually a useful enhancement given that the page will still need manual maintenance. * Pppery * it has begun 03:12, 22 August 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Pppery, I apologize for the long response time. Originally I had in mind that automating would make it more useful, but perhaps this page is not the right case for this. I will continue looking for other places where automation could help and open up those ideas for discussions later. Thank you for your work. SamanthaNguyen (talk) 03:45, 3 September 2020 (UTC)
- Please delete Module:Extension namespaces if you are no longer planning on using it. * Pppery * it has begun 03:50, 3 September 2020 (UTC)

Make changes to Manual:Combating spam
[edit]Hi!
I'm the author of the dns blacklist that resides at tornevall.org and would like to update the manual for combating spam. How can I provide new/updated information to that page?
//Tomas Tornevall (talk) 16:39, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
- Why dont you update direcly => Manual:Combating_spam with your modifications ?
- Christian 🇫🇷 FR (talk) 17:14, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
- I wasn't allowed. The page said that only approved users were able to edit the page :)
- //Tomas Tornevall (talk) 12:43, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
- Hi Tomash, You are 'approved user' after having made a minimum of contributions and passed a given number of days of activity; this is an automatic process (see exact conditions in the general help pages). Today I see only 4 on www.mediawiki.org and 15 on sv.wikipedia.org that means 19 contributions with an account open for more than 6 years (April 2014).
- Christian 🇫🇷 FR (talk) 18:07, 10 September 2020 (UTC)
- Even if it takes some time for me to answer here (I usually forget, and my mail notifications isn't the most visual for me), but does this means that I should make a new try? Tornevall (talk) 18:29, 18 November 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, if it does not work, let me know and we'll find a way. Leaderboard (talk) 10:59, 28 November 2020 (UTC)

Language showcase about module translation
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
Hi!
It's not the usual yadda-yadda.
This Wednesday, August 26 at 12:00 UTC there will be an online meeting on the topic of localizing Scribunto Lua modules. Posting it here because mediawiki.org will be one of the wikis that will likely be most directly affected by this project.
More about this event: mw:Wikimedia Language engineering/Showcase.
All editors are invited, especially all those who:
- Develop modules and templates in any wiki, particularly the multilingual ones such as Wikidata, Commons, Meta, and mediawiki.org.
- Translate software and pages using the Translate extension on translatewiki.net, Meta, mediawiki.org, etc., and manage translatable pages.
A little intro can be found at Phabricator task T238417, and much more information will be given at the meeting.
Thanks! Amir E. Aharoni (WMF) (talk) 20:22, 24 August 2020 (UTC)
- Time change
- I've been feeling very unwell today, and since I'm the main host and presenter in this meeting, I have to postpone this meeting to next week.
- New time: Sep 2, 2020 02:00 PM UTC. Zoom link: https://wikimedia.zoom.us/j/95167235390
- I am terribly sorry about the late notice and about the spam, but these circumstances are out of my control. Thanks for understanding, and I hope to see you at the new scheduled time! :) Amir E. Aharoni (WMF) (talk) 08:44, 26 August 2020 (UTC)
- May I please join because I have been having problems with translating my work.

Trying to create a Mediawiki user page with external links
[edit]The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on the appropriate discussion page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.
I am currently a GSoD'20 Intern, and I am trying to create a User page for myself. Some of the links I added are links to my external profiles and written GSoD proposal on phabricator. Each time I try to publish, I keep getting an error that I am not allowed to add external links. I would like to request that I am permitted to add this links. The page I am trying to create is a replica my [./Https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Gbahdeyboh user page on wikitech.wikimedia.org] Gbahdeyboh (talk) 17:05, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
- That was due to your lack of editing history. You should be able to do so now. Clump (talk) 17:55, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot Clump, it works now Gbahdeyboh (talk) 18:18, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

The Wikimedia Foundation will be testing its secondary data centre. This will make sure that Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia wikis can stay online even after a disaster. To make sure everything is working, the Wikimedia Technology department needs to do a planned test. This test will show if they can reliably switch from one data centre to the other. It requires many teams to prepare for the test and to be available to fix any unexpected problems.
They will switch all traffic to the secondary data centre on Tuesday, September 1st 2020.
Unfortunately, because of some limitations in MediaWiki, all editing must stop while the switch is made. We apologize for this disruption, and we are working to minimize it in the future.
You will be able to read, but not edit, all wikis for a short period of time.
- You will not be able to edit for up to an hour on Tuesday, September 1st. The test will start at 14:00 UTC (15:00 BST, 16:00 CEST, 10:00 EDT, 19:30 IST, 07:00 PDT, 23:00 JST, and in New Zealand at 02:00 NZST on Wednesday September 2).
- If you try to edit or save during these times, you will see an error message. We hope that no edits will be lost during these minutes, but we can't guarantee it. If you see the error message, then please wait until everything is back to normal. Then you should be able to save your edit. But, we recommend that you make a copy of your changes first, just in case.
Other effects:
- Background jobs will be slower and some may be dropped. Red links might not be updated as quickly as normal. If you create an article that is already linked somewhere else, the link will stay red longer than usual. Some long-running scripts will have to be stopped.
- There will be code freezes for the week of September 1st, 2020. Non-essential code deployments will not happen.
This project may be postponed if necessary. You can read the schedule at wikitech.wikimedia.org. Any changes will be announced in the schedule. There will be more notifications about this. Please share this information with your community.
