Welcome to Engineering at Illinois

Walking around our campus, it is easy to be reminded of the excellence that is Engineering at Illinois. It is evident in the facilities that surround the Bardeen Quad and the north campus. It is reinforced by the awards which continue to honor our faculty and researchers. And it is in the eyes of our students. They know that they are among the best anywhere in the world, and that much will be expected of them after they graduate.

But it is even more gratifying to see how Illinois is viewed beyond our community. Each month, our faculty and alumni are quoted, and the results of our research appear, in hundreds of publications and websites around the globe. Our excellence and expertise are endorsed by our funding agencies—both corporate and governmental—who seek our collective, interdisciplinary talents to solve problems of significance and create new knowledge.

For example, the Universal Parallel Computing Research Center—established this spring with funding from Microsoft and Intel—is closely aligned with the overall theme of continued excellence in computing at Illinois, and in particular, for high performance computing. Coupled with our efforts in trustworthy computing at the Information Trust Institute and Coordinated Science Laboratory, as well as the Petascale Blue Waters project at NCSA, our college and campus will be defining the future of computing. This is just one area in which we work and excel.

Spring is all about renewal and growth. Here at Illinois, we have the seeds and soil, along with the knowledge and experience that will continue to bear great fruit.
