We publish simultaneously in print and in E-Book on our own electronic platform. We also ensure that all our content is featured on third party partner platforms serving the academic community, so that your readers can access your work from their preferred platform or supplier.
Our catalog includes well-respected series, monographs, bibliographies, major reference works and digital references, to meet the varied needs of scholars and libraries. Your Acquisitions Editor will discuss with you the best ‘fit’ for your work.
Open Access
We are committed to ensuring that our content reaches the widest possible audience, that we are research-funding compliant, and actively involved in initiatives to promote Open Access in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
Perhaps in the future all books will be published this way. For now, we make decisions on a title-by-title basis based on what’s right for the title and the author as well as for us as a business. Our Open Access publication charges are competitive, page-based and tailor-made.

Preparing your manuscript
- A book’s audience, purpose and structure are all different from those of a dissertation. All publishing is very competitive. To attract readers to your work, prioritize what is new, different and original.
- A clear structure will give your readers confidence in your ability to organize your material and your arguments.
- Make sure your manuscript is spell-checked and copy-edited (we can help you find support for this).
- Submit your manuscript as a single file, either in Word or as a PDF.

Q: What are the costs of publishing with Brill?
A: There are no costs for publishing your book with Brill unless it will be Open Access, in which case your Acquisitions Editor will discuss with you.

Q: I have published a chapter/article with Brill. Can I publish it elsewhere?
A: Yes, this is usually fine. Just read the guidance on our rights and permissions page or contact rights@brill.com for more details.
Q: How long does it take to publish a book with Brill?
A: After acceptance of your manuscript, it takes about 6 months. Find out what’s involved by looking at our Production Timeline.
Q: Do I get a discount on Brill books?
A: Yes! Authors and editors of Brill books can order any of our titles on our website at 35% discount.
Q: I want to publish in Open Access. How does this work?

Q: How do you decide the price of a Brill book?
A: Many of our books are very specialist, and the audience for them worldwide is small, which pushes up the costs we need to cover. Most of our books are bought as part of library collections for their academic communities to access, rather than by individuals. If your library has access to the E-Book on brill.com, you can buy a MyBook copy at €25 or $25 as an individual.

My older paper on Herman Melville’s use of visual arts in his novels, drew inspiration from That Cunning Alphabet, by Richard S. Moore.
