#EngineersUnplugged S2|Ep9: IPv6 or 1970s Math

April 10, 2013 at 12:13 pm PST

The Internet of Everything fuels our daily lives, but leads to some new challenges in the networking space. Join us for this week’s episode of Engineers Unplugged as Damian Karlson (@sixfootdad) and Tom Hollingsworth (@networkingnerd) discuss the pros and cons of IPv6, firewalls, and the failure of 1970′s math. Watch and see:

Welcome to Engineers Unplugged, where technologists talk to each other the way they know best, with a whiteboard. The rules are simple:

  1. Episodes will publish weekly (or as close to it as we can manage)
  2. Subscribe to the podcast here: engineersunplugged.com
  3. Follow the #engineersunplugged conversation on Twitter
  4. Submit ideas for episodes or volunteer to appear by Tweeting to @CommsNinja
  5. Practice drawing unicorns

Follow us on Facebook.com/EngineersUnplugged for inside information, extra pictures, and to volunteer episode ideas. What’s your take on IPv6?

World IPv6 Congress – “The Buzz“

simlo

By Steve Simlo, IPv6 Product Manager, Cisco Network Operating Systems Technology Group

The World IPv6  MPLS / Ethernet / SDN World Congress events wrapped up recently with over 500 industry specialists in attendance, including myself. For 3 days the buzz was on how IPv6 has advanced since last year’s World IPv6 Launch to become reality.

Day One focused on Mobile, Day Two on Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), Home networking and emerging Cloud and Core applications of IPv6 and Day Three looked at Security and Measurements.

Here is my personal summary of a few of the items that I found most compelling:

1. Mobile IPv6 based deployments are happening now. Providers such as Verizon and T-Mobile are offering real services over LTE. In addition we are seeing some emerging niche services such as the “Advanced Emergency Response Service” in Slovenia being deployed to leverage some of the emerging advanced capabilities of IPv6 in terms of QoS, policing, marking and advanced unicast and multicast routing. Enterprise Connect Recap: Smart Desk Phones, WebEx, TelePresence, and More!

April 9, 2013 at 3:48 pm PST

In March, I make an annual journey from Dallas to Orlando – not to visit that famous mouse or take a Spring break.  No, I am there with thousands of IT, telecom, and networking professionals who have descended upon Orlando to attend Enterprise Connect, the leading conference and expo on enterprise communications and collaboration.

This year, both Jimmy Ray and Robb (along with the amazing TechWiseTV crew) joined me to capture all of the excitement, announcements, and cool demos.

If you missed the conference, don’t fret.  We have all of the highlights here!

First, I caught up with Rob Lloyd immediately after his keynote to get the scoop on the Internet of Everything and how it will impact businesses.

Cisco Live 2013 – a Showcase for IPv6 Technology

simloBy Steve Simlo, IPv6 Product Manager, Cisco

Network Operating Systems Technology Group

We’ve been actively promoting the adoption of IPv6 at various venues -- back in January at Cisco Live London, and a few weeks ago at the V6 World Congress, which focused on the adoption of IPv6 in mobile networks.

Our next big venue is Cisco Live in Orlando, Florida June 23-27, 2013 and I want to take the opportunity to reflect on how IPv6 is becoming an increasingly important component of the event agenda, infrastructure and look forward to some of our future ideas for Orlando.

I have personally participated in Cisco Live for over 15 years as a speaker but this was my first time as a member of the IPv6 Team. For those of you who do now know I am the Product Manager for IPv6 in Cisco’s Core Technology team that we call Network Operating Systems Technology Group.

My observations on what I saw and heard in London were as follows: Read More »

My Observations from HIMSS 2013 #IoE

A doctor in California diagnosing a patient in Africa. An Ohio woman on vacation accessing her medical records from an emergency room in London. A patient’s vital signs being monitored remotely from a hospital on the other side of town. These are all scenarios that just years ago seemed impossible… but could be made possible by Cisco.

In life, I’m consistently amazed by the astonishing change and progress that can occur in the short span of just one year. In technology, it moves even more quickly. Walking into the 2013 HIMSS conference in New Orleans, it was obvious to me that pace of change in healthcare is accelerating dramatically. The sheer size of the event and the number of companies that attended this year’s conference, each demonstrating innovative products, technologies, or methodologies to connect healthcare providers and patients was astonishing.
