Under the Presidency of Romano PRODI,
the French artist Bernard ROMAIN, Viviane REDING, Commissioner of Education and
Culture, Neil Kinnock, Vice-president of the European Commission, inaugurate
officially on December 9,
2003
in BRUSSELS, a monumental statue of EUROPE, “Unity in
Peace” in the garden of VAN MAERLANT (
ERASMUS center )
The work of Bernard ROMAIN was
carried out under the control of the artist himself with visual handicapped
children with the continuation of a traumatism of the sight of which he had
suffered, thus wanting to prove that the handicap is not incompatible with one
know-how.
Made out of resin, it measures more
than
5 meters
and weighs nearly
800 kg.
The sculpture posts several symbolic
systems. The colours used represent at the same time the ethnic diversity of
the various communities in
Europe, but also all
the colours of the national flags of the Member States. The message is clear:
“The Unity in Peace”.
The interlaced arms represent, the
braid, the union, the force and fraternity. The blue sphere represents the
world of
Europe surmounted by the dove of Pea
