Democratic Convention AnnouncesNightly Themes

LOS ANGELES - Lydia Camarillo, Chief Executive Officer of the Democratic National Convention Committee, and Convention Chairman Terry McAuliffe today announced the nightly convention themes for America 2000: The Democratic Convention. The convention will take place August 14-17 in Los Angeles, CA.

"America 2000 will celebrate the nation’s prosperity and highlight the new progress that America will make under the leadership of Al Gore and the Democratic Party," said Camarillo.

"Our convention will make clear that hard-working men and women from all walks of life are the force behind our prosperity and the heart of the Democratic Party. Their stories that are the inspiration for Al Gore and the Democratic Party to fight for their future," said McAuliffe.

Monday, August 14

"Prosperity and Progress"

The opening night of the convention will celebrate the unprecedented economic growth of the last eight years and highlight ways the Democratic Party will build on this strong foundation to make progress for working families. Featured speakers will be: President Clinton; women senators and candidates, including Hillary Rodham Clinton; and ordinary Americans whose lives and businesses have improved under the leadership of the Clinton-Gore Administration.

Tuesday, August 15

"New Heights: You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet"

Tuesday evening will showcase the new heights that America can reach if the nation’s new leaders make the right choices. Featured speakers will include champions for working families such as Senator Bill Bradley, Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg, Senator Ted Kennedy and the Reverend Jesse Jackson.

Wednesday, August 16

"Al Gore: The Principled Fighter"

Al Gore has long taken on powerful special interests on behalf of the American people. From his service in Vietnam to his days as a journalist in Tennessee, later as a Member of Congress and the Senate, and as Vice President, Al Gore has led the fight for America’s families against the old guard and the entrenched interests. Wednesday’s program will tell Gore’s life story through the words and experiences of the people he has fought for through the years. In addition to this evening’s nominating speeches, including a speech by Karenna Gore Schiff, the Vice Presidential nominee will address the convention.

Thursday, August 17

"Al Gore’s vision for the future"

Al Gore’s vision for the future includes revolutionary improvements in public schools, better health care, and a strong economy. He will fight for the people, not the powerful, to improve the lives of America’s working families. Mrs. Gore will introduce her husband’s nominating speech on Thursday night.
