User story & summary:
As a new account holder, I want to understand who my mentor is and what they can help me with so that I can feel more confident reaching out and get help editing Wikipedia.
As a mentor, I want newcomers to understand they are contacting a real person so that the messages I receive are more relevant, thoughtful, and easier to respond to.
Background & research:
This task is important because early interactions with mentors are a key opportunity to improve newcomer retention and satisfaction. While the Mentorship feature connects newcomers with experienced editors, current UI implementations may not clearly communicate who the mentor is or what role they serve.
Recent feedback and observations suggest that many newcomers do not fully understand the purpose of the Mentorship module, and some seem to think they are posting questions to a help bot. Improvements to clarity and trust could lead to better engagement.
Example questions from new account holders who confuse Mentorship tools as AI or a help bot.
Related ideas include:
- Adding a short descriptor under the mentor’s name such as “An experienced editor who has volunteered to help you learn Wikipedia” or “Editing since 2xxx”
- Clarifying the tone and purpose of the module via microcopy changes
- Displaying relevant mentor activity or "last seen" info to reinforce availability (requires technical scoping)
- T297787: Add support for mentors to provide avatars/photos in addition to signatures (probably a larger effort)
- Ideas & notes from Product Ambassador discussion.

Acceptance Criteria:
Given the current Mentorship features,
What are some low-effort improvements we should consider to help make the feature easier for newcomers to understand, and ultimately improve the impact of this set of features?
Bonus: What are some bigger ideas we should consider exploring in the future?
