Definitions
Open Access literature is defined as digital, online accessible, gratis, and free of most permission restrictions (Suber 2012, Chap. 1). Compared to gratis Open Access which refers to scientific articles without price barriers, Libre Open Access is attributed to scholarly literature that is both free of charge and with at least some permission barriers removed (copyright and licensing restrictions) (Suber 2012, Chap. 3). Within Open Access two major routes can be distinguished: Golden Open Access through Open Access journals and Green Open Access through repositories and self-archiving (Harnad et al. 2008). Article Processing Charges is the term used for a fee charged by some Open Access journals for the publication of a scientific article (Solomon and Björk 2012).
